Easier window splits in tmux

I’m a huge fan of tmux and using split windows.  However, I’ve never been able to wrap my head around the default key mappings.

For whatever reason, the default tmux settings use Ctrl-b + % and Ctrl-b + “ for splitting windows. I found that hard to remember. Instead, I remapped Ctrl-b + v for a vertical split and Ctrl-b + h for a horizontal split.

Open your tmux.conf:

vim ~/.tmux.conf

Make the following changes:

bind v split-window -h
bind h split-window -v
unbind ‘”‘
unbind %

You can still use Ctrl-b + arrow key to jump around between splits.

It’s a minor change but I feel it is much easier to remember.
